In all of my internal and external client conversations, one question has recently dominated conversations: Where have all the paid ads gone?
Have you noticed that Google paid ads are virtually invisible in search engine result pages?? I was aware that AIOs were coming and taking over a lot of space within the SERPs but, I have to admit, I didn’t expect such a drastic change so quickly! There is no doubt that the traditional landscape of SERPs is – HAS shifted dramatically. There’s no way around this, the AI Overviews often occupy prime real estate, paid ads are being pushed further down the page or disappearing altogether.
Google’s introduction of AI Overviews has significantly changed the structure of search results. Once dominated by a mix of organic listings and paid ads, SERPs now frequently showcase AI-generated answers that provide users with immediate solutions.
According to recent reports (and you can see more of the latest stats below), AI Overviews appear in around 13.14% of U.S. desktop searches as of March 2025, doubling from just 6.49% in January. These Overviews are especially common in problem-solving and informational queries, appearing in 74% of such searches.
Coexistence of paid ads and AI Overviews
The coexistence of paid ads and AI Overviews is becoming less common. As of November 2024, ads appeared alongside AI Overviews in just 8.77% of searches, down from 13.51% in August. This trend highlights the increasing challenge for advertisers to secure prime ad real estate in the evolving AI-driven SERP landscape.
Adapting to the New Reality of AI Overview and Paid Advertising
To stay competitive, businesses must rethink their strategies:
- Optimize for AI Inclusion: High-quality, authoritative content is more likely to be featured in AI Overviews, potentially mitigating visibility loss.
- Broaden Your Channel Strategy: Diversify your ad spend to include platforms beyond Google, like social media and niche search engines.
- Enhance Campaign Monitoring: Regularly track performance metrics to understand how AI Overviews affect your specific ad placements and engagement.
- Leverage AI in Ads: Use AI tools to dynamically adjust bids and placements in response to changing SERP layouts.
The rise of AI in search is not just an evolution—it’s a transformation. As AI-generated answers become more common, the role of paid ads in search results must be reimagined.
